What a good ChatGPT request has in it

ChatGPT answers the question you typed, and it fills every gap you left with a guess. Ask «help me plan my week» and it has to guess your deadlines, your hours and what a good week means to you, so you get a tidy plan for somebody else's life. The prompts on this page close those gaps before the model starts. Each one covers the same five things, and you can do the same in any request you write yourself.

1. The job, and what it's for. «Summarize this contract» is a job. «Summarize this contract so I can decide by Friday whether to sign» tells ChatGPT which parts matter.
2. The material. Paste the notes, upload the PDF, list your real tasks. An answer built on your material is about you; one built on nothing is about an average person.
3. The shape of the answer. The parts you want, in order, and how long each one should be. «Three parts: the decision, the risks, the next step» is easier to use than a page of prose.
4. The rules. Usually just one that matters: don't invent names, numbers or dates I didn't give you. Mark the gaps instead.
5. Permission to ask. «If something essential is missing, ask me up to three questions first.» It's one line, and it's the difference between a plan and a guess.

Here's that pattern short enough to type from memory:

I need [the job] so that I can [what you'll do with it].
Here is what you have to work with: [paste or attach].
Answer in [number] parts: [part 1], [part 2], [part 3].
Use only what I gave you; write [MISSING] where a fact is needed.
If something essential is unclear, ask me up to three questions first.

Bigger jobs have their own pages

Some tasks need a dozen prompts, not one, so they live in their own collections. If your job is on this list, start there.

• Resume prompts. The whole application: tailoring to a job ad, ATS checks, summaries, career gaps. Start with the Achievement Interviewer if you can't remember what you achieved.
• Rewriting prompts. Shorter, clearer, a different tone or reader, another format. The Paragraph Rewriter is the everyday one.
• Humanize prompts. For drafts that sound like a chatbot wrote them. The Voice Profile Builder teaches ChatGPT how you actually write.
• Small business prompts. The back-office jobs an owner does alone: invoices, reviews, policies, hiring, the weekly numbers.
• Self-improvement prompts. Habits, goals, routines and hard conversations, built around the life you described.
• Photo prompts. Edits of your own pictures: headshots, cutouts, styles, stickers.

One request, before and after

This is a request we wrote to show the difference. The first version is how most of us type when we're busy:

Help me plan my week, I have a lot going on.

It gives ChatGPT nothing to work with, so expect a generic template: wake up early, block time for deep work, don't forget self-care. The second version takes thirty more seconds:

Plan my week so I hit the Thursday 5 pm report deadline.
Fixed: Mon and Wed 9-11 meetings, school pickup 3:15 daily.
I work 8:30-3 and focus best before 11.
Tasks: report (about 6 hours), two client calls, expenses,
reply to the vendor emails. Leave some slack every day.
Give me a day-by-day plan, then what to drop if Tuesday goes wrong.

Now the plan has to fit real hours, the report lands in the mornings, and the drop list tells you what gives first when a day falls apart. The Weekly Planner asks for all of this for you, and it caps the bookable week at 70 percent, so the slack is built in.

Follow-up lines that fix an answer

You rarely need a new prompt when the first answer misses. One line in the same chat usually does it.

Where ChatGPT answers go wrong

The prompts here guard against the usual failures, but you'll still see them, and it helps to know what they look like.

• Confident numbers from nowhere. Salary ranges, prices, percentages. If you didn't supply the figure and ChatGPT didn't search for it, treat it as a guess. The Salary Negotiation Script refuses to invent market data for that reason.
• Old information. Without a search, ChatGPT answers from what it learned in training. For anything that changes, ask it to search and to date its sources.
• Agreeing with you. Describe a plan with enthusiasm and you'll often get enthusiasm back. Ask for the strongest objection on purpose; the Decision Matrix Maker builds that step in.
• Long chats drifting. After many turns, earlier instructions lose weight. A fresh chat with a short summary works better than one more correction.
• Files read partly. Scans and very long files sometimes get skimmed, so ask what it couldn't read and check every number against the page.

ChatGPT settings that change the result

Some things outside the prompt matter as much as the wording. These are as of October 2026; OpenAI changes them often.

• How hard it thinks. Free and Go plans use GPT-5.6 Luna, with a Think button for harder questions. Plus and Pro have a Thinking slider from Instant up to higher levels. On Plus and Pro, Instant doesn't switch to deeper thinking by itself, and typing «think harder» won't change the level. For the Decision Matrix Maker or the Research Briefing Analyst, pick a higher level before you paste.
• Files and long pastes. Free and Go have unlimited everyday text chats, but file uploads have their own limits, so a long PDF can run out before you do. If you paste more than 10,000 characters, ChatGPT turns the paste into an attachment; «Show in text field» puts it back.
• Reusing a prompt. For preferences that apply everywhere, use custom instructions; our guide to ChatGPT custom instructions covers where they are and what to put in them. For a prompt you run every week on the same material, a project works well: project instructions apply only inside that project and override your custom instructions. Don't build a new custom GPT around a prompt. OpenAI plans to retire custom GPTs on December 11, 2026 and move them to plugins.
