Midjourney reads a prompt as subject, style and parameters. Each block below is in that order and ends with the flags (--ar, --s, --c, --style) so it pastes straight into Discord or the web app.

Midjourney isn't a chatbot. A standard prompt is a description of the picture you want to see, not a set of instructions, and its own guide says short, clear prompts usually work best. «Make me a picture of a lighthouse, make it stormy and paint it in watercolor» is a request. «Watercolor painting of a lighthouse in a storm at dusk» is a picture.
A good prompt decides five things and leaves the rest to the model:
Then the parameters, which always go at the end, after a space, with no commas or periods inside them. A pattern you can type from memory:
[Medium] of [subject] in [setting], [light], palette of [colors], [framing] --ar [shape] --s [number] --raw --no text, watermark
Two habits from the docs save a lot of rerolls. Say what you want, not what you don't: a party «with no cake» can still grow a cake, so exclusions go in --no. And words you want inside the image go in double quotation marks, kept short; single quotes don't work.
The current default model is V8.2, released on July 24, 2026. These are the parameters worth knowing in it, with ranges and defaults from Midjourney's documentation:
| Parameter | What it does | Values |
|---|---|---|
| --ar (--aspect) | The shape of the image | Default 1:1. Whole numbers only, so 139:100 for 1.39:1. Up to 14:1 in V8.2, 4:1 in HD |
| --s (--stylize) | How much of its own taste Midjourney adds | 0 to 1000, default 100 |
| --c (--chaos) | How different the four images in a grid are | 0 to 100, default 0 |
| --raw | Turns off the default styling, so the prompt carries more of the look | On or off |
| --no | Things to keep out | A list separated by commas |
| --sref | Borrows the colors, medium and light of an image or a style code, without its objects | An image URL or a code; --sw 0 to 1000 sets its strength, default 100 |
| --v | Picks a model version | V8.2 by default; older ones such as V8.1 and V7 by number |
| --hd / --sd | 2048px or 1024px output in V8.1 and V8.2 | HD costs 1.3 minutes of GPU time, SD 0.8 |
| --edit | Builds a new image from up to four reference images, or changes one by instruction | Image URLs in Discord; «Attach to prompt» on the website |
One spelling to know about. Older guides write Raw as --style raw; Midjourney's current docs spell it --raw, and that's what the blocks on this page use.
Older tutorials also use --cref (Character Reference) and --oref (Omni Reference) to put a character or object into a picture. In V8.x both are replaced by the Edit model, which takes up to four reference images at once. And if an old style code from a tutorial looks wrong, the docs explain why: style references changed between V6 and V7, and adding --sv 4 brings back the older behavior.
Each block below is one kind of image with the parameters already set. Pick by the job, then fill the brackets.
| You need | Use | Shape and settings |
|---|---|---|
| A product shot with room for a headline | Product On Marble | 4:5 with stylize held at 150 and Raw on, so the bottle reads as a photograph |
| A fashion portrait | Editorial Fashion Portrait | 4:5, hard sun |
| A frame that looks lifted from a film | Cinematic Film Still | 21:9 anamorphic framing with a teal and amber grade and the subject small in a wide frame |
| An exterior render for an architect or a listing | Architecture Visualisation Render | 16:9 at dusk |
| A science fiction set | Sci Fi Interior Corridor | 16:9, one-point perspective down a worn corridor, with volumetric haze and a red emergency strip |
| A painterly world for a cover or wallpaper | Fantasy Valley Landscape | 16:9, stylize 600, chaos 12 |
| Something charming and handmade for a shop, a sticker or a kids' brand | Knitted Toy Animal | Square |
| A room as a miniature | Isometric Cozy Bedroom | Square, a 45-degree cutaway with two walls left open and soft contact shadows |
| A real-looking city that reads as a toy model | Tilt Shift City View | 3:2 with a narrow band of focus |
| A portrait mixed with a landscape | Double Exposure Portrait | 4:5 in black and white, with the face left unidentifiable and a forest filling the silhouette |
| A decorative card | Tarot Card Illustration | 2:3, stylize 750 |
| Poster art with space for your own type | Vintage Travel Poster | 2:3, four flat colors and an empty band along the bottom |
This is the sort of prompt that still circulates from older tutorials:
a beautiful cozy cabin in the woods, ultra realistic, 8k, highly detailed, masterpiece, award winning, trending on artstation --v 6
Here's how we'd write the same idea today. It's our example, written for this page, not something we're presenting as model output:
Photograph of a small timber cabin in a snowy spruce forest at blue hour, warm light in two windows, smoke rising from the chimney, one set of footprints leading to the door, shot on 35mm from the path at eye level, palette of deep blue and amber --ar 3:2 --s 150 --raw --no people, text, watermark
Half the original describes nothing you could see. «8k», «masterpiece» and «trending» name no light, place or lens. The rewrite spends the same words on things the picture can show: the hour, two lit windows, smoke, a single set of footprints that suggests someone just arrived. «--v 6» goes too, because it pins an old model; keep it only if you want V6's look. Raw and a modest stylize keep it reading as a photograph, and the --no list stops a stray hiker or a watermark from turning up.
Change one thing at a time, so you can tell what helped.
| The grid | Try |
|---|---|
| Four images that look nearly the same | Add --c 20 for more spread between them |
| Four images all over the place | Lower --c, or remove it to go back to 0 |
| Pretty, but it ignored your details | Lower --s to around 50, or add --raw |
| Correct, but flat and plain | Raise --s to 300 or more, and drop --raw |
| An object you excluded in the text keeps appearing | Remove it from the sentence and put it after --no |
| Lettering comes out misspelled | Shorter words in double quotes, plus «with the words». The docs also suggest Raw or a lower stylize |
| A moderation warning on an innocent prompt | Check the --no list: each word is read on its own, so describe what you do want |
| The wrong shape for where it's going | Set --ar to the slot: 4:5 or 2:3 for a feed, 16:9 for a header |
Failed prompts tend to break in the same places.
Every block pastes as written into the Imagine bar on the website or into Discord. Reference images go through the image panel on the web and as URLs in Discord. As of October 2026, Midjourney's help center lists four plans at $10, $30, $60 and $120 a month, with 20% off when you pay for a year. Standard and up add unlimited image generation in Relax mode, and only Pro and Mega include Stealth mode, which keeps your images private. There's no free trial on the website or in Discord. Our Midjourney review keeps the full plan table, the AI image generators page compares the alternatives, and the AI image prompts page has blocks written for tools that read plain sentences.
--ar sets the aspect ratio, so --ar 4:5 gives an upright frame. --s is stylize, the amount of its own taste the model adds, which is why Product On Marble sits low at 150 while Fantasy Valley Landscape runs at 600. --c is chaos, the spread between the images in one grid. And --raw pulls the house look back towards straight photography.
Use it when the subject has to look real: the product, architecture and fashion blocks all carry it, because the default treatment adds a gloss that photography does not have. Leave it off where you want the model's own hand, as Fantasy Valley Landscape and Tarot Card Illustration do, since a painterly finish is the point there. High stylize with raw pulls in two directions at once.
Give every prompt the same style reference with --sref and hold stylize at a single value, because changing that number shifts the look as much as the reference does. Write the subject lines in parallel so the wording differs only where the picture does. Reference syntax has changed more than once, so confirm the current form before committing to a long series.
Because signage, labels and watermarks filled the training images, and the model copies the habit. That is what the --no list at the end is for, and it takes several terms separated by commas, as in --no text, watermark, logo. Tilt Shift City View adds signage lettering to its own list for exactly this reason. Set any real type yourself once the picture is done.
