ChatGPT vs Gemini: which one fits your work
Gemini vs ChatGPT in brief: Gemini is cheaper to start and lives inside Gmail, Docs and Drive. ChatGPT includes Codex on the free plan and has more tiers for heavy use.
Gemini vs ChatGPT starts from a lot of overlap: both chat, search the web, read files, make images and talk back by voice. The differences sit in pricing, in the apps each one plugs into, and in what you get for coding. This page compares them on facts from OpenAI's and Google's own pages, checked in October 2026, and gives you two prompts to run in both so you can judge answer quality yourself.
Short verdict: who should pick which
- You use Gmail, Docs and Drive all day: Gemini. From the $4.99 Google AI Plus plan, Gemini works directly inside Google apps.
- You want the lowest paid price: Gemini. Google AI Plus is $4.99 a month; ChatGPT Go is $8.
- You want a coding agent for free: ChatGPT. Codex is included, with limited usage, on ChatGPT Free and Go.
- You want video: Gemini. Google lists video generation from Plus; ChatGPT's plan page does not list video.
- You need cloud storage anyway: Gemini plans bundle storage, from 400 GB on Plus to 20 TB and up on Ultra.
- You work in Microsoft Office: ChatGPT. It has add-ins for Word, Excel and PowerPoint, plus Google Sheets, with fuller limits from Plus.

Feature table, from the vendors' own pages
| Feature (Oct 2026) | ChatGPT | Gemini |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | Yes, $0 | Yes, $0 |
| Cheapest paid plan | Go, $8/month | Google AI Plus, $4.99/month |
| Models in the app | GPT-5.6 Luna on Free and Go; GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Luna from Plus | 3.6 Flash; varying access to 3.1 Pro on Free, more on paid plans |
| Context window in the app | 27K free; 54K, or 256K with reasoning, on Go and Plus; up to 400K Pro | 32K free, 128K Plus, 1M Pro and Ultra |
| Image creation | Yes | Yes, image generation and editing on Free |
| Video generation | Not on ChatGPT's plan page | From Google AI Plus |
| Voice | Yes, limited on Free | Gemini Live, on Free |
| Deep research | Limited on Free, expanded on Plus | Deep Research, on Free |
| Coding agent | Codex: CLI, IDE extension, cloud, desktop app | Jules (higher limits on Pro); Google Antigravity agent model |
| Coding agent on the free plan | Yes, Codex with limited usage | Not listed on Free |
| Office apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Google Sheets add-ins; Gmail, Calendar and Drive plugins | Gemini inside Google apps from Plus |
| Cloud storage in the plan | Not listed | 15 GB free, 400 GB Plus, 5 TB Pro, 20 TB+ Ultra |
| API model inputs | GPT-6: text and image | Gemini 3.8 Flash: text, image, video, audio, PDF |
| API context window | GPT-6 models: 1.05M tokens | Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.1 Pro: 1,048,576 tokens |
The app and the API run on different limits. A 1M-token API model does not mean your app plan gives you 1M tokens; both vendors publish app limits per plan, which is why those rows carry several numbers.
Which is better for writing, coding, research and images
Writing
Neither vendor publishes a writing score we can quote. The practical difference is where you write. Gemini drafts inside Gmail and Docs on paid plans, so text lands where you send it from. ChatGPT keeps work in Projects and custom GPTs, which help when you reuse one brief. Run the first prompt below in both and keep the version you would edit least. More starters are in our ChatGPT prompts and Gemini prompts collections.
Coding
ChatGPT has the clearer coding story for individuals. Codex runs in a terminal, an IDE extension, the ChatGPT desktop app and the cloud, and OpenAI includes Codex on every plan, with limited usage on Free and Go. On Plus, OpenAI estimates 15 to 160 local GPT-6.1 Sol messages per five-hour window, depending on the task. Google lists Jules, an asynchronous coding agent, with higher limits on Google AI Pro, plus agent-model rate limits in Google Antigravity. Our AI coding tools page compares more options.
Research
Gemini includes Deep Research on the free plan, and Google AI Pro raises the app context window to 1M tokens, enough for long reports. ChatGPT Plus lists expanded deep research and ChatGPT Work, an agent that can research across connected apps and files and produce documents, spreadsheets and presentations.
Images and video
Both make images. Gemini's free plan includes image generation and editing and limited access to Nano Banana Pro; video generation starts at Plus. ChatGPT creates images on its plans, and OpenAI notes that image generations use included limits 3 to 5 times faster on average. See Nano Banana prompts for Gemini image ideas.
Desktop apps, saved instructions and student offers
Google has moved fast on the app side this year. Its release notes list a Gemini app for Windows 10 and later on September 10, 2026, opened with Alt+Space, and on September 30, 2026 skills: reusable instruction sets you can stack for one task, which Google says will soon replace Gems. ChatGPT's equivalent is the custom GPT, and its desktop app is also where Codex and ChatGPT Work run. Students get the clearest deal from Google, which announced a free year of Google AI Pro for eligible US college students on August 19, 2026. If you are writing reusable instructions for either one, our guide on how to write prompts covers the structure, and the AI chatbots list shows the wider field.
Same prompt in both: run it and compare
No sample outputs here, since both models update often. Fill in the blanks, run each prompt in ChatGPT and Gemini, and compare.
I want you to act as an email assistant. Turn these notes into a reply to [recipient and their role]: [paste your notes]. Tone: [friendly / formal / brief]. Keep it under [number] words, put the answer to their question in the first sentence, and end with one clear next step.
I want you to act as a data analyst. Here is a table: [paste CSV or table]. Find the three most important patterns, show the numbers behind each one, and say what you would check next. Do not guess values that are not in the table.
The second prompt shows how each model handles numbers it was given versus numbers it might invent. Check every figure against your table.

US list prices before tax. Google shows local prices in other countries. For developers, OpenAI lists GPT-6.1 Sol at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens and GPT-6 Luna at $0.10 and $0.50. Google lists Gemini 3.8 Flash at $0.75 and $3.75 through December 31, 2026, then $1.50 and $7.50, and Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview at $2 and $12 for prompts up to 200K tokens. On ChatGPT Pro, OpenAI paused new sign-ups for the $200 tier on September 10, 2026.
