Topaz Photo

Topaz Labs' AI finishing tool for photos: denoise, sharpen, upscale and recover faces, on Mac, Windows and as a plug-in.

Topaz Photo review: our take

Topaz Photo is the tool to reach for when a photo is noisy, soft or too small, and the rest of the edit is already done. Its Wonder upscaling models, Denoise and Recover Faces work as a final step, either in the standalone app or as a plug-in inside Photoshop, Lightroom Classic or Capture One. Rendering on your own computer is unlimited.

The money goes on a subscription: $39 a month, or $199 a year, and the standard license limits commercial use to organizations under $1 million in revenue. There is no desktop trial, only a 48-hour refund, so plan to test it fast. If you also need everyday editing, the Adobe Lightroom plan includes a Topaz-powered upscale; for a one-time purchase, see Luminar Neo.

What Topaz Photo does

Topaz Photo fixes image quality rather than content. It removes noise, sharpens, upscales with its Wonder and Standard Max models, recovers faces, removes dust and scratches and balances light and color. It runs on Windows and macOS, as a plug-in for Photoshop, Lightroom Classic, Capture One, Affinity and Apple Photos, with local or cloud rendering.

Who Topaz Photo is for

Best for

  • photographers rescuing noisy, soft or small images
  • editors who want an upscaling step inside Photoshop or Lightroom Classic

Not for

  • trying before paying: Topaz staff confirmed there is no trial for the desktop collection, only a 48-hour refund policy
  • businesses over $1M in yearly revenue on the standard license: full commercial use needs the Pro license
  • generative editing such as replacing skies or adding objects: it is a quality tool
