Claude Code review: our take

Claude Code is the agent to try when a change spans many files: it reads the repository, plans, edits, runs the tests and opens the pull request, and a session can move between the terminal, VS Code, the desktop app and the web. CLAUDE.md files, skills and hooks keep project rules in one place. It comes with Claude Pro at $20 a month, or $17 billed yearly, and Max from $100 gives 5x or 20x the usage.

The limit that matters is usage: Claude Code shares Pro's limits with ordinary chat, and there is no free tier. For an editor with AI built in, see Cursor. For a free way to try an agent, Codex runs on ChatGPT Free. Our Claude Code cheat sheet and Claude Code vs Codex go deeper.

What Claude Code does

Claude Code works across a whole repository: it plans changes, edits multiple files, runs tests and commands, and creates commits and pull requests. It runs in the terminal on macOS, Linux and Windows, in VS Code and JetBrains, in the Claude desktop app and on the web, and connects to other tools through MCP. CLAUDE.md files, skills, hooks, subagents and scheduled routines extend it, and an Agent SDK lets you build your own agents.

Who Claude Code is for

Best for

  • developers who make multi-file changes from the terminal
  • teams that want an agent in CI and pull requests
  • Claude subscribers who already pay for Pro

Not for

  • anyone who wants a free tier: Claude Code starts with the paid Pro plan
  • heavy daily users on Pro: Claude Code shares Pro's usage limits with chat
