I've just come out of a negotiation that isn't finished. Help me see what actually happened and plan the next round.
What it was about: [salary, rent, a supplier price or something else]
My target and my walk-away point: [your two numbers]
Where it stands now: [e.g. they'll come back on Friday]
What was said, as well as I remember it:
[paste your notes, emails or the message thread]
Work only from what I gave you. Then:
1. Rebuild the timeline: each offer and counteroffer in order, who made it, and the number or term.
2. List every concession, mine and theirs. For each, say what came back in return, or "nothing" if it was free.
3. Find the first number put on the table and who named it. Show how far each later offer moved from it.
4. Point to the moment I had the most room to ask for more, and what I could have asked for.
5. Flag anything I gave away about my position that I should keep to myself next time: my deadline, my walk-away point, another offer or how much I need this.
6. Write the follow-up message for the next round, under 120 words: confirm what we've agreed so far, make one clear ask and offer one trade I can live with.
If my notes don't show who said something, mark it "unclear" and don't guess. Don't invent market rates or say what's typical; if a benchmark would help, tell me where I could find one. Never put my walk-away point in the message.
Rehearse a hard conversation with a boss, a colleague or a friend, then get a debrief on what worked and what to say instead.
