Taste skill for Claude
Taste Skill is a community set of frontend design skills by GitHub user Leonxlnx. Its main skill reads your brief, picks a design direction, tunes three dials for layout, motion and density, and checks the page before it ships.
npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill design-taste-frontendTaste Skill sets out to stop AI-built pages from looking like the same template. It is a community project by GitHub user Leonxlnx under the MIT license, and it works with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor and other agents that read the SKILL.md format. Anthropic does not publish it. If skills are new to you, start with how Claude Skills work.
What the skill does
The main skill installs as design-taste-frontend. As of October 2026 its default is version 2, which the author marks experimental. Its SKILL.md limits its scope to landing pages, portfolios and redesigns, and leaves dashboards, data tables and multi-step product screens out. The method:
- Read the brief first. Claude writes a one-line "design read" before generating, and asks one question if the brief is unclear instead of guessing.
- Three dials from 1 to 10: design variance (centered and clean to asymmetric), motion intensity (hover effects to scroll-driven motion) and visual density (spacious to dense).
- Rules for type, color, layout, shadows, states and images, plus a rule to check
package.jsonbefore importing any library. - Audit first on redesigns, then a pre-flight check before handing over.
The repository holds variants too: a stricter one for GPT and Codex, a redesign skill for existing projects, soft, minimalist and brutalist styles, and image-generation skills that produce reference mockups and brand boards for another tool to build from.
When to use it
- A marketing site or portfolio that should not look like every other AI-built page.
- Restyling an existing site, using the redesign variant.
Anthropic's own frontend-design skill is the shorter, official option, and Impeccable adds commands and automated checks. Our Claude Code vs Cursor comparison helps if you are still picking the agent, and our coding prompts work without any skill.
How to install it
All skills in the repository:
npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill
Only the main skill:
npx skills add https://github.com/Leonxlnx/taste-skill --skill design-taste-frontend
The README also says you can copy a SKILL.md into your project, or paste it into a ChatGPT or Codex conversation.
Example request
Use the taste skill. Build a landing page for [product] aimed at [audience]. Tone: [two or three words]. Set design variance to [1-10], motion to [1-10] and density to [1-10]. Give me your design read before you start.
Limits
- Version 2 is experimental. The README keeps version 1 installable as
design-taste-frontend-v1for projects that need stable behavior. - It is not meant for dashboards or data-heavy product screens.
- For placeholder photos it points to picsum.photos, so swap in your own images before launch.
- The README carries sponsor and referral links. They are not part of what the skill tells Claude, but read SKILL.md before installing, as with any community skill.
