Grammarly

AI writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling and tone wherever you type, with rewrites and AI prompts on top.

Grammarly review: our take

Grammarly is an editor more than a drafter: it is best at catching mistakes and adjusting tone in text you already wrote, in almost every app where you type. The free plan covers spelling, grammar and tone with 100 AI prompts a month. Pro adds sentence rewrites, fluency, plagiarism and AI-text checks and 2,000 prompts.

Where the money goes depends on billing: Pro is $12 a month on a yearly plan, $60 a quarter, or $30 month to month, with a 7-day trial. Its AI detector is free, but Grammarly itself says no detector can prove AI use. For drafting long pieces, pair it with Claude or ChatGPT; for fiction, see Sudowrite.

What Grammarly does

Grammarly checks what you have already written for spelling, grammar and tone, in a desktop app, browser extensions, Microsoft Office, Google Docs and mobile keyboards. Pro adds full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, fluency suggestions, plagiarism and AI-text detection, and 2,000 generative AI prompts a month.

Who Grammarly is for

Best for

  • people who write all day in email, docs and browser tabs
  • non-native English writers who want fluency suggestions
  • teams that need a shared style guide

Not for

  • month-to-month users on a budget: Pro is $30 a month unless you commit to a year at $12 a month
  • heavy AI drafting: the free plan has 100 prompts a month and Pro 2,000
  • proving that you wrote a text: Grammarly's own FAQ says no detector can definitively conclude whether AI was used
